Kerid Crater
Lake Suðurland, Iceland
About Kerid Crater
Kerið (often spelled Kerid) is a visually stunning volcanic crater lake located in South Iceland, frequently visited as part of the Golden Circle route. Roughly 3,000-6,500 years old, it's known for its striking caldera featuring steep slopes of red volcanic rock that dramatically contrast with the opaque, vivid aquamarine or blue-green water filling its base. Believed to have formed when a magma chamber collapsed rather than through a large explosion, this accessible crater offers picturesque views both from the rim and down by the water's edge.
