Camusdarach Beach
Beach Highland, Scotland
About Camusdarach Beach
Camusdarach sits just south of the River Morar estuary — the River Morar being the shortest river in the UK — along the old coast road between Arisaig and Mallaig. The beach is a broad arc of fine white shell-sand backed by low, grassy dunes, with water that runs a pale green-blue over the shallows and clear enough to see the bottom on a calm day. Looking out to sea, the jagged Cuillin ridge on Skye fills the northern horizon, with the profiles of Rum and Eigg sitting further south. At low tide, rocky outcrops at either end of the bay open up for exploring. The beach served as 'Ben's beach' in Bill Forsyth's 1983 film Local Hero, and fans of the film still make the trip. Late May through early September offers the best combination of light and warmth, though July and August bring both the largest crowds and the worst midges; an evening visit in June, when it stays light past ten, is worth considering.
