Loch Eilt
Lake Highland, Scotland
About Loch Eilt
Loch Eilt is a freshwater loch in Lochaber, sitting about 30 km west of Fort William between the villages of Glenfinnan and Lochailort. The A830 road traces the north shore while the West Highland Line railway runs along the south, which means you get a decent view of it without ever leaving the car or the train. The loch marks the boundary between the old districts of Morar to the north and Moidart to the south. Scattered across the water are several small islands fringed with ancient Caledonian pines — the most photographed of these is Eilean na Moine, at the western end, which was used as the filming location for Dumbledore's grave in the Harry Potter series (the island was later composited with footage of Loch Arkaig for the final cut). The loch also appeared in the 1983 film Local Hero. Surrounding hillsides reflect off the dark water, and the scale of the mountains rolling down to the shoreline gives it a very different feel from the more open Scottish lochs further east. Summer brings the clearest light, though the landscape holds its mood well into autumn.
