Sanna Beach

About Sanna Beach
Sanna sits near the far western tip of the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, making it one of the most westerly points on the British mainland — and getting there is part of the experience. The approach from Kilchoan takes you along 30-odd miles of single-track road, passing through the flat, heather-covered plain of Achnaha, which sits inside the crater of a long-extinct volcano. The bay itself is made up of four smaller sandy coves divided by rocky headlands, backed by large established dunes that can reach around 3 metres high. Views from the dunes and the nearby Sanna Point take in Eigg, Rum, and Skye to the north and Ardnamurchan lighthouse to the south-west. Spring and summer bring colour to the dunes — thyme, harebells, orchids and vetches — and otters are occasionally spotted along the shore. The hamlet is also the setting for Alasdair Maclean's memoir Night Falls on Ardnamurchan.
