Sychryd Waterfall
Waterfall Powys, Wales
About Sychryd Waterfall
The River Sychryd cuts a narrow, wooded gorge on the edge of Pontneddfechan, and following it upstream from the Dinas Rock car park takes you to Sgydau Sychryd — a three-tiered waterfall that drops beneath a wooden footbridge into an emerald plunge pool called Pwll y Berw. The walk in is short and almost flat, which makes the scale of the gorge walls feel a little surprising when you get there. Across the river stands Bwa Maen, a dramatically folded rock formation whose name translates loosely as 'bow rock', a visible reminder of the geological contortions that shaped this corner of the Brecon Beacons. Near the falls there are the remains of a silica mine, and the overhanging cliff section of the gorge is well known to climbers — it reportedly hosts the hardest bouldering problem in Wales. The trail connects into the wider Waterfall Country network, so you can extend the day considerably if you want. There's free parking at Dinas Rock and the path is accessible year-round, though the falls are at their most forceful after wet weather.
