Sgwd y Pannwr
Waterfall Powys, Wales
About Sgwd y Pannwr
Sgwd y Pannwr — Welsh for 'Fall of the Fuller' or 'Fall of the Woollen Washer' — sits on the Afon Mellte river in the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, close to the village of Ystradfellte. It's the third waterfall on the popular Four Waterfalls Walk and, at around 12 metres, drops in one heavy main cascade into what are reputedly the deepest plunge pools of the four falls on the route — a pull for wild swimmers, though the water runs cold year-round and the rocks underfoot are reliably slippery. The name nods to the area's former wool industry: fullers once used the force of falling water to beat and clean woollen cloth. Getting down to the base involves crossing the river after Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn and picking your way over rocks on the steepest, muddiest section of the walk. Autumn tends to bring the most dramatic flow and the added colour of the broadleaf woodland that lines the gorge.
