Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn
Waterfall Powys, Wales
About Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn
Sgwd Isaf Clun-Gwyn — 'the lower fall of the white meadow' in Welsh — sits on the Afon Mellte in the Brecon Beacons' so-called Waterfall Country, south of the village of Ystradfellte. It's the middle of three named falls on the Mellte and one of four on the popular Four Waterfalls Walk, a roughly 9-kilometre trail through dense deciduous woodland. Unlike a clean single-drop fall, this one is multi-staged and spreads wide across multiple channels, sending water down around 30 metres in total. The best perspective is from the bottom, where you can take in the full spread — though getting down there requires a steep, sometimes slippery scramble. The trail overall is more strenuous than it might look on a map, with significant elevation changes between each fall. Autumn is a particularly good time: the woodland canopy turns and the rainfall tends to keep the flow strong. Wetter months generally mean a more powerful cascade; dry summer spells can reduce it considerably.
