Pistyll Cain
Waterfall Gwynedd, Wales
About Pistyll Cain
Pistyll Cain — Welsh for 'Cain's waterspout' — sits inside the Coed y Brenin Forest, whose name translates as Forest of the Kings, in the wooded valley of the Afon Cain, a tributary of the Afon Mawddach. The river drops over a sheer rock face into a terraced series of rocks below, and you view it from an iron bridge positioned directly in front of the fall, which makes for an unusually close, unobstructed look. The trail to reach it starts from the Tyddyn Gwladys car park near Ganllwyd off the A470 and takes roughly an hour each way; it also forms part of the Goldmine Trail, named for the Gwynfynydd gold mine whose remains sit just below the nearby Rhaeadr Mawddach waterfall a short walk further on — Welsh gold from mines in this area has traditionally been used for British royal wedding rings. Artists were already drawing the falls in the early 19th century during the Romantic period, and it has been a popular destination ever since. After heavy rain the volume of water increases significantly, so late autumn and winter visits tend to be the most dramatic.
