Minh Thanh Pagoda
Castle Gia Lai, Vietnam
About Minh Thanh Pagoda
An extraordinary modern Buddhist complex located near central Pleiku, celebrated for its unique East Asian architectural style reminiscent of classical temple complexes in Japan, China, and Taiwan. Originally founded in 1964 and extensively rebuilt and expanded since 1997 under Venerable Thích Tâm Mãn into a spacious 2-hectare spiritual site. Features the towering 9-story Xá Lợi Stupa, an iconic structure with layered curved roofs and intricate ornamentation that dominates the local skyline. Highlights a striking 7.5-meter-tall, 40-ton white stone statue of Amitabha Buddha standing serene in the middle of the Lotus Pond (Hồ Liên Trì). Showcases master craftsmanship within the main sanctuary, featuring thousands of Buddha statues lining the walls, a carved Fokienia (pơ-mu) wood ceiling designed around Mandala cosmological concepts, and massive hand-carved wooden doors depicting the Four Heavenly Kings (Tứ Đại Thiên Vương).
Getting there
Located at 148 Nguyễn Trung Trực street, Hội Phú ward, roughly 2 kilometers from the center of Pleiku city. Easily accessible via taxi, private car, or motorbike with paved city roads leading directly to the main gate. Dedicated parking areas for motorbikes and cars are available near the entrance. Open daily for worshippers and visitors; dress respectfully (modest clothing covering shoulders and knees) as it is an active religious sanctuary. Best visited during early morning or late afternoon for gentle lighting, cooler weather, and ideal photo conditions along the open courtyards and stupa paths.
