About Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn
Maes Parcio Ynys Llanddwyn is the main car park serving Newborough Beach and Llanddwyn Island on the south-west tip of Anglesey — in Welsh, 'maes parcio' simply means car park. From here, a mile-long walk along a broad sandy beach backed by Newborough Forest, one of the largest publicly accessible forests in Wales, brings you to Ynys Llanddwyn itself: a small tidal island that detaches from the mainland only at the very highest tides. The island holds the ruins of a medieval church and holy well dedicated to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, whose feast day on 25 January is Wales's answer to Valentine's Day. Dotted around are a 19th-century lighthouse and an old lifeboat house, and the geology here is notable enough to form part of a UNESCO Global Geopark, particularly for its pillow lava formations. Looking back from the island on a clear day, the Snowdonia mountains and the Llŷn Peninsula fill the horizon. Summer weekends fill the car park fast, so earlier in the day or in the shoulder seasons — spring and autumn — you'll have the beach largely to yourself.
