Fairy Glen Falls
Waterfall Highland, Scotland
About Fairy Glen Falls
Fairy Glen is an RSPB nature reserve on the Black Isle, just outside the village of Rosemarkie and a short drive from Inverness. The path — around 1.25 miles from the car park — runs along a burn through a steep-sided broadleaf woodland of oak, ash, and birch, past moss-covered rocks and a millpond that is at least a couple of hundred years old, once used to supply ice to the fish-houses in Rosemarkie. Further up the glen you reach the first of two twin waterfalls, each dropping into a plunge pool below; a rope handrail helps with the steeper climb between them. Dippers bob on the rocks in the stream, buzzards circle above the canopy, and grey herons work the shallower stretches. The glen has an old piece of local folklore attached to it: children from the village would dress a nearby spring pool with wildflowers as an appeal to the fairies to keep the water clean. The path is muddy in places and has some rough sections, so sturdy footwear is worth wearing.
