Chu Dang Ya Volcano
Mountain Gia Lai, Vietnam
About Chu Dang Ya Volcano
An extraordinary geological landmark located roughly 30 kilometers northeast of Pleiku, featuring a rare cluster of three adjacent funnel-shaped ancient volcanic craters. Formed by violent eruptive activity millions of years ago, leaving behind deep bowl-shaped calderas and porous basaltic lava rocks scattered across fertile mountain slopes. Highlighted in international media coverage (including recognition referenced by Britain's Daily Mail) as one of the world's most captivating extinct volcanoes due to its unique natural amphitheater terrain. Named "wild ginger" in the native Jrai language, where violent ancient lava fields have transformed over millennia into rich basalt soil cultivated with local crops like sweet potatoes, corn, and arrowroot. Displays distinct seasonal charms: transforming into brilliant gold during the peak wild sunflower (hoa dã quỳ) bloom in October and November, while maintaining lush green cultivated crater fields throughout the broader dry season.
Getting there
Accessible by driving approximately 30 km northeast from central Pleiku toward Chư Păh district via provincial roads leading directly to the base of the volcano. Parking facilities for vehicles and motorbikes are provided near the base of the mountain, where local trails lead up into the caldera slopes. Features moderate hiking trails along the rim and floor of the ancient craters; wearing sturdy, high-traction footwear is recommended for walking along red soil and stone paths. Best visited from October to April (the dry season) for clear skies, easy trekking, and dry trail conditions. Plan specifically between late October and November if you want to experience the iconic wild sunflower season and local culture festival.
