Ardvreck Castle Waterfall
Waterfall Highland, Scotland
About Ardvreck Castle Waterfall
On the A837 road along Loch Assynt in Sutherland, this compact 20–30-foot waterfall drops from a stream into the loch almost directly opposite the ruins of Ardvreck Castle. The castle itself, dating to around 1490 and built by the MacLeods of Assynt, sits on a rocky promontory jutting into the water — it's the ruins you tend to notice first. The waterfall is on the other side of the road and, despite being visible from both the road and the castle, goes unnoticed by a lot of visitors since there's no signage pointing to it. It's a multi-level drop with a short walk down to the base, or you can get up above it following the nearby loch edge. The broader scene is hard to ignore: big open water, the jagged outline of the ruins, and the rough Assynt hills behind. It's a natural stop if you're driving the North Coast 500, which passes right by.
