Kylesku Bridge in Highland, Alba / Scotland

About Kylesku Bridge

Kylesku Bridge carries the A894 across Caolas Cumhann — Gaelic for 'narrow strait' — where Loch Glencoul and Loch Glendhu meet Loch a' Chàirn Bhàin in Sutherland. What makes it stand out isn't just the water: the bridge has a pronounced curve to it, and its deck sits on two pairs of splayed V-shaped concrete piers that fan out toward the water. Designed by Ove Arup & Partners and opened in August 1984, it replaced a ferry crossing that had been running since the early 1800s — for most of its life, remarkably, free of charge. Historic Environment Scotland gave it Category A listing in 2019, citing it as 'visually striking and technically innovative.' There are car parks at both ends: the lower southern one puts you right at water level looking up at the piers, while the northern one looks back across the strait toward the Quinag massif. That northern car park also holds a small memorial to the XIIth Submarine Flotilla, whose midget submarines trained in these sea lochs during World War II. It sits on the North Coast 500 route.
