Ffrwd Fawr Waterfall

Waterfall Powys, Wales

About Ffrwd Fawr Waterfall

Ffrwd Fawr — Welsh for 'great stream' — is a 40-metre (130 ft) waterfall where the River Twymyn drops in a near-vertical plunge over a rock face into the Dylife Gorge, at the head of the Pennant Valley. It sits close to the small village of Dylife, roughly midway between Machynlleth and Staylittle in mid-Wales. The gorge itself is dramatic, with open moorland above and steep valley sides dropping away beneath you. A short public footpath of around a kilometre from the parking area near Dylife leads to the viewpoint — wear sturdy footwear, as the ground gets slippery after rain. The surrounding landscape carries the marks of a centuries-long lead and silver mining history, and the old mine workings at Dylife are still visible from the walk. Glyndwr's Way, the long-distance national trail, passes just to the south of the area. The falls tend to be most impressive in wetter months, when the Twymyn is running high.
