About Seaton Wetlands
Seaton Wetlands sits alongside the River Axe in East Devon, roughly halfway between Sidmouth and Lyme Regis, and is made up of four distinct areas: Seaton Marshes, Black Hole Marsh, Colyford Common, and Stafford Marsh. Black Hole Marsh is one of the more interesting parts of the story — it was converted in 2008 from a drained agricultural field into a saline lagoon, with islands built on a shallow scrape to attract wildfowl. From the hides you get wide, open views across the inter-tidal lagoon and the Axe Estuary. The reserve rewards visitors year-round but with different things on offer: kingfishers, redshank, snipe, and shoveler ducks are more reliably seen in winter, while summer brings dragonflies and damselflies to the ditches and ponds. Otters have been spotted at the Borrow Pit Pond on Seaton Marshes. There are five bird hides and nearly 4 km of level trails and boardwalks — all free, accessible to wheelchairs and bikes, and dog-free. The Seaton Tramway runs alongside part of the site.
