Rocky Valley
Cove Cornwall, England
About Rocky Valley
Rocky Valley runs for about a mile through north Cornwall, just east of Tintagel, where the Trevillet River has carved a narrow gorge through dark slate. The canyon walls rise more than seventy feet in places, draped in an extraordinary range of mosses — over 160 species have been recorded here — and the river tumbles past the ruins of an eighteenth-century woollen mill before meeting the sea at Bossiney Bay. Carved into the gorge wall near the old mill are two small labyrinth patterns whose age is genuinely contested; they've been called Bronze Age by some and much more recent by others, but they draw plenty of curious visitors regardless. Dippers and grey wagtails work the stream, and otters have been recorded here too. The South West Coast Path passes through the valley rather than along the coastal cliffs, because the seaward end is too sheer and wave-swept to walk safely. It's National Trust land and accessible year-round, though spring brings wild flowers through the woodland section.
