Nohoval Cove
Cove Cork, Ireland
About Nohoval Cove
Nohoval Cove sits on the south Cork coast about 30 km from Cork City and 10 km east of Kinsale, reached by a series of increasingly narrow dead-end lanes — one car passing another can be an adventure in itself. The cove is small, with a rocky shore where loose stones shift and turn audibly with each wave, backed by cliffs that drop steeply to the water. Several jagged rocks break the surface of the bay itself, and the colour of the water moves between deep blue and a pale green depending on the light. What makes the place particularly interesting is the industrial past sitting right on top of the natural scenery: the approach is lined with the ruins of old lime kilns, castellated enough to be mistaken for a small fort, alongside the remnants of a slate mine. The area was once a working hub before both industries were long abandoned. Divers and kayakers use it regularly. Parking is extremely limited — if more than a handful of cars have arrived before you, it gets difficult. A clear summer day is the practical choice.
