Goðafoss
Waterfall Norðurland eystra, Iceland
About Goðafoss
Goðafoss is a historically significant and powerful waterfall in North Iceland, located along the Skjálfandafljót river. Its name, meaning "Waterfall of the Gods," stems from a pivotal moment in Icelandic history when, around the year 1000 AD, the chieftain Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði is said to have thrown his pagan idols into the falls upon the official conversion of Iceland to Christianity. Today, it's a breathtaking sight with its wide, horseshoe-shaped cascade and turbulent turquoise waters.
