Glenashdale Burn
Waterfall Argyll and Bute, Scotland
About Glenashdale Burn
The Glenashdale Burn drops around 45 metres in a double cascade — known in Gaelic as Eas a' Chrannaig — making it the most impressive waterfall on the Isle of Arran. The trail from Whiting Bay on the island's eastern coast runs about 4 kilometres through a wooded glen, climbing alongside the burn as the valley narrows and steepens. The woodland is dense with mosses and ferns — Arran's mild, damp climate suits ferns especially well, with around 45 species recorded on the island — and two separate viewing platforms give different angles on the falls. The walk pairs naturally with a detour to the Giant's Graves, two Neolithic chambered cairns sitting on a ridge about 120 metres above the bay with open views over Whiting Bay and Holy Island. Worth knowing: as of mid-2025 the main trail has a long-term diversion in place due to storm damage, so check Forestry and Land Scotland's signage before heading up.
