About Edenfield Waterfall
A short walk east from Edenfield village along Plunge Road brings you to this small but characterful waterfall tucked into the wooded valley of Dearden Clough. The water drops over a sandstone crag into a clear pool below, with the stream — Dearden Brook — carrying on through the trees. What gives the spot an extra layer of interest is what surrounds it: the ruins of Plunge Mill, a woollen fulling mill built around 1801 by Giles Hoyle, later converted to cotton spinning under the Wallwork family, and eventually cleared and excavated by Rossendale Groundwork Trust in the 1980s. The old waterwheel housing and tailrace are still legible on the ground. The whole site stays remarkably quiet — dog walkers aside, you can often have it to yourself. No strong seasonal preference, though after rain the falls are noticeably fuller, and autumn brings decent colour to the surrounding woodland.
